As long as the californio ranchos covered the East Bay, grizzly bears thrived on the carcasses of skinned cattle the vaqueros left on the open range. But by the 1860s, fenced farms—and many more people—covered the land. The last grizzly seen in the East Bay was spotted in an Orchard in San Leandro in 1863.
