Henderson Luelling

Renowned horticulturist Henderson Luelling planted the first Fruitvale orchards in the early 1850s. Also known for his work in the anti-slavery movement, he had come from the Midwest. An apple tree Luelling planted survived until the 1970s on Woodbine Street.
 
Luelling's daughter-in-law Elizabeth gave "Fruit Vale" its name.
