Gold Rush Sofa
Sofa 1830-60
American Federal/American Greek Revival style
Donated by Devereaux family descendent Alanna Zupann
Re-upholstered 2008 with horsehair from China by Luque's Upholstry of Alameda

One of only four or five surviving sofas known that were brought to California from the eastern U.S. before or during the Gold Rush, this one belonged to the Devereaux family.
Most sofas were sold on the long journey, as ships sailed down the east coast, south around Cape Horn—before the Panama Canal was built—and up the west coast of South America and Mexico to California.
