Natives founded Alisal, a Native community on the Bernal rancho near present day Pleasanton. It was a cultural haven for workers displaced from other ranchos in the late 1800s as the Californios lost their land.
Jose Guzmán and his companion Maria de los Angeles Colos, lived at Alisal. They later documented the East Bay Ohlone language of Chochenyo with Anthropologist J.P. Harrington. Colos and her family lived on Doming Peralta's section of Rancho San Antonio. No photo of her has survived.
