Foods from Europe
The Spanish introduced these species to California. They brought root stocks for fruit trees and grape vines in their saddlebags on the Anza expedition, and seeds for European grains. Wheat, barley, oats. California is now famous for many of the Old World foods the Spanish introduced, such as grapes, almonds, oranges and walnuts. And they brought domesticated cattle and many other animals. The Spanish had brought these plants and animals with them to New Spain when they came from Spain originally. These species had long been eaten in Europe and other continents. Many originated four thousand years ago or more in Asia and the Middle East and Africa.
