How Did Mexico Lose Half Its Territory?

At the end of the U.S.-Mexican War in 1848 Mexico lost half its territory to the United States. The U. S. paid 15,000,000 for it under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
 
This treaty also granted U.S. citizenship to the Californios, and, in principal, the right to keep their ranchos.
