Program Director, Youth Arts, History and Ecology Program 

Program Description

The Inner and Outer Ecologies program takes place on the weekends in the spring and on weekdays in the summer. In this program, youth aged 16-21 do two things: 

  1. They learn filmmaking, ecology as part of site stewardship activities, and how to be museum guides. 
  2. They mentor younger children aged 5-15 at set hours in a variety of outdoor activities offered at Peralta Hacienda (arts, hands-on history, gardening, cooking, nature, storytelling). 

 

Responsibilities of the Program Director Iinclude:

  • Coordinate the Inner and Outer Ecologies youth programs at Peralta Hacienda Historical Park in the spring and summer of 2014, including:
  • Hiring and supervising four additional instructors in environmental education, history and filmmaking for high-school age interns, and in arts, gardening and history activities for younger children.
  • Lead the recruitment of 60-100 children aged 5-15 from the surrounding community as program participants for both spring and summer sessions.
  • Direct and instruct 25 youth interns of high school age in the mentoring of the younger children; building the team of interns through ice-breaking and storytelling activities. (Interns are already recruited.)
  • Develop and supervise the program activity schedule with the Executive Director for both the younger children and youth interns.
  • Teach and lead classes in the program.

 

Description:

The Program Director must have a strong background In youth development and experience team-building for high school age. He or she must have teaching experience for children of all ages, and management experience. Spanish language proficiency preferred, and background in some of the following areas: cooking/nutrition, environmental education, California history, filmmaking, gardening. The program director will need excellent organizational abilities, and must have the initiative and creativity to weave together the threads of the program.

Terms:

This is a part-time role

16 hrs per week @ $25 per hour 

Spring Program Schedule: Saturdays and Sundays 1230-530 from Feb through May

Summer Program Schedule: M-F, 1-6 June, July, Aug.

Public History Director, Community Tour Leaders Program 

Responsibilities of the Public History Director, Community Tour Leaders Program include:

  • Teach current and newly recruited docents how to lead visitor-centered inquiry-based tours, connect their own lives to site history and integrate their stories into tours.
  • Deepen docents' understanding of site history, including Native American, Peralta family, and 20th century threads.
  • Recruit new docents from the surrounding community.
  • Prepare and schedule docents presentations at local organizations, churches and schools to raise awareness about the historic site.
  • Manage History Cafés, a monthly social evening for the docents with guest  speakers, open to the public. 

Description:

The Program Director must have a strong background in, and sophisticated understanding of, California History. They must have teaching experience, and the ability to mentor adults of many cultures and of varying educational levels. 

A public history or teaching background with strong presentation skills is preferred. 

The  program director will need excellent organizational abilities, and must have the initiative and creativity to bring this program to the next level over the next two years. Fluency in Spanish required.
